#2 - Lucky Dube Tribute

As many of you already know, yesterday, Lucky Dube was killed outside of Johannesburg in his native South Africa. Heartbeat sends our sincere condolences to Lucky Dube’s family, and to all the fans who were touched by Lucky Dube’s music and message.

Lucky Dube album cover

From Hearbeat’s Chris Wilson:

Lucky Dube’s death, and the circumstance surrounding its occurrence, is not only a profound shock but it also goes against all that Lucky Dube stood for and worked for throughout his life. He was not only one of South Africa’s greatest artists but he was one of a handful of artists who made a mark in the Reggae world who were not from Jamaica. His stance against apartheid and the oppression of his fellow black brethren resulted in the banning of his first album Rasta Never Die by the South African government in 1985. Lucky Dube might have left us, but the power of his message will never die.

Since 1981, Heartbeat Records has been releasing and reissuing Jamaican music. A big part of Heartbeat’s effort to release reggae music’s greatest hits is our relationship with Studio One, Jamaica’s all-time, most celebrated record label. In 2006, Heartbeat renewed it’s relationship with Studio One, kicking off a reissue series featuring The Best of Studio One, Full Up: More Hits from Studio One, and Downbeat the Ruler: Killer Instrumentals from Studio One, complete with bonus tracks and updated liner notes. With episode #1, we invite you to enjoy Heartbeat’s first-ever podcast, hosted by Heartbeat’s own Joshua B. Episode #1 of “The Heartbeat” is designed to catch you up with Heartbeat’s Studio One reissue program. And in the meantime, you’ll hear some of Jamaica’s greatest songs.
